President Trump and his team are taking back our nation’s capital. His announcement that the homeless encampments will be removed was an important component of his latest effort to Make America Safe Again!

Homeless camps have already been removed from most national parks in Washington D.C., and occupants have been given the ultimatum to either accept treatment and housing or be arrested.

At the same time, Attorney General Pam Bondi is now working with the Washington police to address the many crimes being committed, especially by teenagers. Restoring consequences for criminal actions is the only way to force these kids to choose a different path. No doubt their families are hopeful that they can now resist the influence of gangs who are being run out of town.

I worked for a U.S. Senator in Washington for a summer in the late 70’s, and enjoyed the opportunity to walk everywhere, play softball in local parks, and go out at night to the great restaurants and clubs. Thirty years later, we took our kids to Washington and walked the entire Mall, visiting every monument and museum. Over the past decade, the City degenerated and it was no longer safe to experience our beautiful Capital.

What does this act of “tough love” mean for local residents and visitors to D.C.?

President Trump’s bold actions have the potential to make it safe to live and work in Washington. Locals will be able to go for a jog or take a walk with less fear of being attacked. Families will be able to enjoy the vast lawns and grounds without worrying their kids will stumble upon needles, human waste, and mentally challenged humans. Local businesses will benefit from an increase in customers as they won’t have to navigate tents and unpredictable homeless people in their doorways. Employees will be able to safely travel on the Metro or other means of transportation to and from work. Schools can resume field trips to the Capital. And local neighborhoods will no longer have drug dealers hanging out near their homes or schools, car break-ins and the fear of being in the line of fire.

The residents of the encampments can benefit as well from offered services and a place to live. Those who choose to remain on the streets will be arrested, providing another opportunity to receive services and face reality. Criminals who had no fear of consequences for carjacking, murders, mugging and stealing will learn the hard way that their actions are no longer tolerated.

Americans deserve to have a Capital that makes them proud. Our prayers are with the brave law enforcement teams who will make this huge task possible.
